When to go to Phuket: seasons, rain and weather by month
The best time to visit Phuket: dry and rainy seasons, sea conditions, red flags on the beaches and how to pick a month by weather and price.
Phuket has two seasons, dry and rainy. The month you pick changes more than the weather: it sets the price of the flight and the hotel, how crowded the beaches are and whether you can swim at all. Here is what happens in each period and when it is better not to go.
Dry season: November to April
Rain is rare, the sea is calm, visibility under water is good and boats run to the islands. This is high season, so flights and hotels cost more, especially at the end of December and in the first days of January.
- November: the season is just starting. There can still be showers, but it is usually noticeably drier than October.
- December and January: the most popular time. The weather is excellent and rooms need to be booked early.
- February and March: hot and dry, with prices a little below the holiday peak.
- April: the hottest month, around 33-35°C during the day. Great for the sea, stuffy for excursions.
Rainy season: May to October
The southwest monsoon brings cloud and rain. It usually comes as downpours that pass in an hour or two, but multi-day rain happens too.
The main difference for a traveler is the sea. On the west coast beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao) there are strong waves and currents in this period. Red flags go up and swimming is not allowed on those days. Lifeguards warn that the currents are dangerous even for strong swimmers.
- May and June: there is rain, but plenty of sunny hours between showers. Prices are clearly lower.
- July and August: changeable weather, often cloudy, with many visitors from Asia and Europe.
- September and October: the wettest months. In October 2026 Phuket had heavy downpours and flooding.
What the sea does in the rainy season
The east and south coasts are more sheltered from the waves, so beaches near Chalong and Rawai are calmer. They are still no guarantee of good weather. Boat trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay are cancelled when conditions are bad, so build a spare day into your schedule.
Temperature and water
It is hot almost all year: about 30-33°C by day and 24-26°C at night. The water is warm in every month, roughly 28-30°C. That makes swimming tempting all the time, which is exactly why you need to check the flags.
How to choose a month
- You want reliably good weather: November, February or March. Book 3-4 months ahead.
- You want to pay less and accept the risk of rain: May, June or early November.
- You are traveling over the holidays: buy December and January flights as early as you can.
- You do not like the heat: December and January are the most comfortable.
You can compare fares by month in the HotTrip flight search, which shows prices for nearby dates.
If the weather lets you down
Travel insurance that covers trip cancellation and excursions removes part of the risk. If the weather is bad, the beach guide helps you pick a calmer area. For a different mix of city and sea, see where to stay in Bangkok.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Phuket?
From November to March: little rain, a calm sea and clear skies.
Can I go to Phuket in the rainy season?
Yes, if you accept downpours and do not plan to swim much. Prices are lower, but the west coast beaches often fly red flags.
What do red flags on a beach mean?
Swimming is not allowed because of strong waves and currents. Ignoring the warning is dangerous, and lifeguards watch the beach.
Which month is the wettest?
Usually September and October.
What is the sea like in June?
Warm but rough: waves on the west coast beaches are higher than in winter.
