When to book cheap flights: how far ahead and on which day
How many weeks or months before departure to buy a ticket, whether there is a cheapest day of the week, how seasons change prices and a checklist before you pay.
"When is the best time to buy a plane ticket?" is one of the most common questions travelers ask. There is no universal date: the price depends on the route, the season, demand and the airline's fare policy. But there are patterns that help you pay less.
How far ahead to buy
Rough guides that work for most routes:
- Domestic flights: usually a good buy 3-8 weeks before departure. In high season (summer, holidays) 2-3 months ahead.
- International flights: 2-4 months ahead, and even earlier for the vacation peak and New Year.
- Long-haul routes (Southeast Asia, the Americas): 3-6 months ahead.
The reason is simple: airlines sell seats in price "buckets". The cheap buckets run out as the plane fills, and the closer the departure, the higher the average price.
Is there a cheapest day of the week to buy
The myth that Tuesday is the cheapest day has lived for years, but the difference between purchase days is usually small and changes. The day of departure matters much more: flights in the middle of the week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) are more often cheaper than Friday and Sunday ones. So it is more reliable to shift the flight date than to pick the "right" day to pay. If your dates are flexible, compare nearby days in the low-fare calendar, and also look at options with a connection: flights with a layover.
Seasonality: when prices are highest
- High season: winter holidays, spring breaks, summer and school vacations. Book early.
- Shoulder season: the start and end of a season, when the same destination costs noticeably less.
- Low season: the lowest prices, but check the weather and whether attractions are open.
For the holidays there is a separate guide: New Year flights: when to book.
How to track the moment to buy
- Open the HotTrip flight search and look at how the price moves by month, so the "normal" price of the route becomes visible.
- Remember it. If a ticket is noticeably cheaper than usual, that is the moment to buy.
- Follow hot offers: when airlines cut prices, those fares sell out within hours.
- Before paying, compare the price on Aviasales.
If the price suits you and the dates are settled, buy. Waiting for an extra discount more often ends with a higher price.
A checklist before you pay
- Compare the price with the "normal" one for this route and month.
- Check whether baggage is included: see no-baggage fares: what you can take.
- Find out the refund and change terms: the cheapest fares are often non-refundable.
- Check the spelling of the name and the date of birth against the passport.
Frequently asked questions
Is it true that tickets are cheapest to buy at night or on Tuesday?
No, there is no stable pattern. Prices on aggregator sites update around the clock, and the difference between purchase days is usually small. The departure date and how full the flight is matter more.
How many months ahead should I buy beach holiday flights for summer?
For popular resort destinations in July and August it is sensible to buy 3-5 months ahead. If your dates are flexible you can catch a lower price closer to departure, but the risk of being left with expensive options grows.
If the price drops after I buy, can I get the difference?
Usually not: a paid ticket is refunded under the fare rules, and airlines do not compensate the price difference. So there is no point chasing every drop, and it is better to go by the "normal" price.
