Phuket beaches: which area to choose for your holiday
A guide to Phuket beaches and areas: Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Nai Harn. Where it is lively, where it is quiet and how to get from the airport.
Phuket is big. The northern beaches by the airport are far from the southern ones, which are more than an hour away by road. There is no metro and no light public transport network, so the area you book decides the whole trip. Here is how the most popular beaches differ and who each one suits.
Patong: lively, for people who like the buzz
The best-known resort on the island. A wide beach, lots of cafes, shops, bars and evening entertainment, including the famous Bangla Road. Accommodation is plentiful, from hostels to large hotels.
The downsides: it is crowded, the beach is full of sunbeds and water sports, and the evenings are loud. With small children, or if you want quiet, look at the neighboring areas.
Karon and Kata: calmer and closer to nature
Karon is a long, wide sandy beach with room to spare even in high season. There are enough cafes and shops around, without the Patong rush.
Kata (Kata and Kata Noi) is smaller, cozier and popular with families. It is easy to walk to shops and restaurants. Kata Noi is quieter still.
A good fit if you want both a beach and infrastructure, but not nightlife.
Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao: unhurried holidays
Kamala has a quiet beach and a few restaurants, a short drive from Patong.
Surin is small and pretty, with expensive cafes. For people who like the atmosphere and are ready to pay more.
Bang Tao is the longest beach on the island, next to the Laguna resort complex and golf. Lots of big hotels and a spacious beach, but far from the entertainment centers.
Nai Harn and Rawai: the south of the island
Nai Harn is one of the most beautiful beaches on Phuket: a bay, sunsets and a calm atmosphere. There is not much accommodation and it is far from nightlife.
Rawai is known for its fish market and the boats to nearby islands. Swimming from the shore is not convenient, but it is a good place to eat and to set off for the islands.
Mai Khao: next to the airport
The north of the island, a beach inside a national park where sea turtles lay eggs. Planes come in low to land, but it is quiet and beautiful. Suited to a relaxed stay in the hotel.
Phuket Town: a city for an evening
An old town with colorful houses and cafes. Staying here makes sense for culture and markets, not the beach. It is better to visit for a day from a beach area.
Getting around
Phuket airport (HKT) is in the north of the island. From it people reach their hotels by taxi, by the Grab and Bolt apps, by bus (the Smart Bus stops along the airport, Patong and Kata route) or by a pre-booked transfer. The bus is the cheapest and the slowest. If you are traveling with suitcases or children, book a transfer in advance: it is easier than haggling at the exit.
On the island people move by taxi, by app and on rented scooters. For a scooter you need a license of the right category, otherwise insurance will not pay out. Swimming on the west coast can be dangerous in the rainy season, which we cover in when to go to Phuket.
What to choose

Frequently asked questions
Which Phuket beach is best for children?
Most families choose Karon and Kata: sandy entry into the water with cafes and shops nearby. In the rainy season swimming is unsafe on all west coast beaches.
Where should I stay on Phuket if I do not want noise?
Nai Harn, Kamala, Bang Tao or Kata Noi. Patong and the center of Kata are loud in the evening.
Do I need a car on Phuket?
Not necessarily. Taxis and Grab are convenient, but they get expensive for distant beaches. If you want to travel a lot, rent a car with a driver or a scooter, and only with a license of the right category.
Is the airport far from the hotels?
About an hour on average to Patong, and around an hour and a half to Kata and Rawai. It depends on traffic.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, medical treatment in Thailand is expensive for tourists.
