Krabi and Ao Nang: islands, beaches and how to choose a base

Krabi is on the Andaman Sea coast in the south of Thailand. The main feature of the province is the huge limestone cliffs that rise straight out of the sea and out of the rice fields. There is less noise and development than on neighboring Phuket, but there are plenty of tourists too. If you are choosing between the islands of the south, also look at Phuket beaches and areas.

Where to stay

According to the Wikivoyage description, the main points are these:

  • Ao Nang. The most developed beach in the province, about 15 km from Krabi Town. Lots of restaurants, travel agencies and hotels, and it is convenient for excursions. In high season, roughly from November 1 to April 30, it is crowded and expensive, close to Phuket in price level.
  • Railay (Rai Leh). A peninsula with cliffs and a few small beaches. You get there by boat, and there are no cars. One of the best-known areas in Thailand for rock climbing.
  • Ton Sai. The cheapest bungalows in the area, a favorite of travelers on a small budget. You can walk to Railay.
  • Hat Yao (Long Beach). One of the least spoiled beaches of the province, with a beautiful view of the cliffs.
  • Krabi Town. The administrative center and a transport hub, suitable for a night when changing transport.

Islands and excursions

From Ao Nang it is easy to go to Phi Phi, Railay and other islands. Tour operators offer sea trips, kayaking and rock climbing. Before you go, check the tides and the state of the sea: in the rainy season some routes are cancelled.

When to go

High season lasts roughly from November to April, and accommodation prices are noticeably higher then. In low season, from May to November, hotels are cheaper, but the sea is rough and some islands are harder to reach. According to Wikivoyage, a room that costs about 600 baht in summer can cost about 1,600 baht in winter. The figures are approximate, so check current prices when booking.

Getting there

Most people fly into Krabi, the main gateway of the region. From the airport to Ao Nang you take a taxi or a minivan. Songthaews run inside Ao Nang, but tourists are often quoted inflated fares, so check the price before boarding. Compare flights in the HotTrip flight search.

Take out insurance in advance: boat excursions and rock climbing are usually not covered by a basic policy.
