Dubai in 4 days: a route with the beach, the desert and the malls
A 4-day Dubai plan: Downtown and the Burj Khalifa, the old city and souks, the Marina and beaches, and a desert safari. Transport, rules and the best season.
Four days in Dubai is enough for the main things: skyscrapers, the old city, the beach and the desert. It is convenient to plan by area so as not to waste hours on the road. Where to stay for a compact route: Dubai: which area to stay in.
Day 1: Downtown
- Morning. The Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping centers. Inside there is an aquarium and an ice rink, and you can spend half a day.
- Afternoon. The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Buy observation deck tickets online in advance and choose the sunset slot, which is the most expensive and the most in demand.
- Evening. The dancing fountains at the foot of the tower and a walk along the waterfront.
Day 2: Old Dubai
- Morning. Bur Dubai and Dubai Creek. The traditional abra boats take you across to the other bank for a small fee.
- Afternoon. The markets of Deira, including the spice market. Bargain, it is customary.
- Evening. Dinner on the waterfront. Dress modestly: it is better to cover shoulders and knees.
Day 3: The beach and the Marina
- Morning. The beaches of Jumeirah or JBR. Public beaches are free, while umbrellas and sunbeds cost money.
- Afternoon. Dubai Marina, a walk along the waterfront by the canal.
- Evening. A cafe with a view of the skyscrapers.
Day 4: The desert
A safari usually takes about five hours: a drive over the dunes, a sunset, a Bedouin-style camp and a barbecue dinner. Choose a proven organizer, read reviews and check whether the transfer from your hotel is included.
Getting around
The Dubai metro has a red and a green line, and trains run every 3-5 minutes from about 5:50 until midnight. The most convenient is the Nol Silver card, for 25 dirhams (19 of them on the balance). Taxis run by meter, about 2.19 dirhams per kilometer. Details are on Wikivoyage.
Rules of behavior
- Alcohol is sold in licensed places, most often in hotels. Drinking in the street is not allowed.
- Sunbathing topless is not allowed, even on hotel beaches.
- There is zero tolerance for alcohol when driving.
- Bars and clubs need an ID: entry from age 21.
Season
It is most pleasant from late September to early May. Summer is very hot and humid, and during the day people spend a lot of time indoors.
