Where to stay in Sharm El Sheikh: Naama Bay, Sharks Bay, the Old Town and Ras Mohammed. Reefs, coral shoes, the airport and entry rules.
Sharm El Sheikh is at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula and is known for diving, beach holidays and desert trips. The city stretches along the shore, and there is a noticeable difference between areas. For a comparison with the Red Sea on the mainland, look at Hurghada: areas, hotels and beaches.
How the resort is laid out
According to Wikivoyage, the city was built on the site of a fishing village only in the 20th century. Today it is a large resort for diving and beach holidays, with the Sinai desert beginning right next to it.
The main tourist zones:
- Naama Bay. The main tourist zone with hotels, restaurants and evening life.
- Sharks Bay. Calmer and closer to nature, convenient for relaxing and snorkeling.
- The Old Town. A more "local" area with markets and inexpensive food.
- Ras Mohammed. A national park nearby and a popular diving spot.
Beaches and sea
The main wealth of Sharm is the coral reefs. Entry into the water is often arranged from pontoons, because there are corals by the shore. Take coral shoes and do not step on the reefs. For a holiday with children, check whether the hotel has a gentle sandy entry.
Airport and entry
Sharm El Sheikh airport (SSH) is the largest on Sinai and receives many charters in winter. You can get to the hotels by taxi or book a transfer. Entry rules: according to the Wikivoyage description, a special entry for Sinai applies if you stay only in the Sharm area, while trips further need a regular visa. Conditions can change, so check them on official resources before you fly.
