Hurghada: when to go and which excursions to choose

Hurghada works for a holiday almost all year, but how the trip feels depends a lot on the season. Summer is hot, winter evenings are cool, and the sea is colder than many expect. Here are the months and the excursions worth considering.

Weather and sea by season

According to Wikivoyage, the climate is very dry:

  • Summer. The hottest months are July and August, with around 37-38 degrees by day. The sea warms to 28 degrees in August.
  • Winter. Mild, but the sea is colder: about 21-22 degrees in January and February. A northeast wind makes evenings cool.
  • Spring and autumn. Warm without exhausting heat, a period many consider the most comfortable for a holiday and excursions.

If you want a beach and warm water, look at May, September and October. For excursions to Luxor and Cairo the cooler months suit better.

Excursions from Hurghada

  • Giftun Island. A sea trip to an uninhabited island with coral gardens, great for snorkeling. Boats go for the day.
  • Diving. The main reefs are a few miles offshore, so divers go out by boat. Compare prices at several centers: at the hotel they are often higher.
  • Luxor. A popular trip to the temples and the Nile. The guide warns that one day is very long, so consider an overnight option.
  • Cairo and the Giza pyramids. A day trip, or one or two days with an overnight stay.
  • The desert. Quad bikes, buggies, camels and an evening in a Bedouin camp.

How not to lose a day

  1. Leave spare time in case of a storm or wind: sea trips can be cancelled.
  2. Put the heavy trips to Luxor and Cairo at the start of the holiday, while you have energy.
  3. Bring water, a hat and shoes you do not mind getting wet.

Weather and storms

Rain and strong wind do happen, as in October 2026 when downpours hit the Red Sea coast. Follow the news before you fly.
