Flying with a child: rules for children and infants

Flying with a child needs preparation: from choosing a ticket to documents and things for the flight. Here are the main rules. The terms differ between carriers, so check them when you buy.

Tickets for children by age

  • Infants under 2 years travel without a separate seat on an adult's lap. On domestic flights this is usually free, and on international flights a ticket with a small fee (a percentage of the fare) is often issued. A limited number of infants without a seat is allowed per adult.
  • Children from 2 to 12 years have a separate seat and a child fare (the discount depends on the carrier).
  • Children from 12 years are treated as adult passengers.

If you need a seat for an infant or a baby bassinet, ask the airline in advance. Fares with free check-in and seat selection suit flights with children well.

Documents for a child

  • An identity document. For international flights the child needs their own passport (including infants). For domestic flights the requirements depend on the country.
  • Consent of the other parent. Some countries require written consent when a child leaves the country with one parent. Check the requirements of the country you are entering.
  • A visa or an electronic permit, if required.

Baggage and things for the child

A child with a separate seat usually has the same baggage allowance as an adult. For infants without a seat, free carriage of baby items is allowed in a limited quantity: a bag of care items, a stroller and a bassinet (under the carrier's rules). For allowances see checked baggage rules and carry-on size and weight.

What to take into the cabin:

  1. Documents and insurance.
  2. Diapers, wet wipes and a change of clothes.
  3. Baby food and water (liquids for children are allowed in the needed amount).
  4. Toys, books and a tablet, to keep things calm.
  5. A lollipop or a bottle to ease the ears on takeoff and landing.

A child without an adult

A child can fly without parents, but with an accompaniment service from the carrier. The minimum age, the cost and the rules are set by the airline (usually the service is provided for children from 5-6 to 12 years). Parents fill in a form, hand the child to a staff member at the desk and meet them at the exit.

How to make the flight easier

It is convenient to look for family fares in the HotTrip flight search and on Aviasales.
